Club Activities - Spring/Summer 2024
This spring we enjoyed a program at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, and a New Member Tea to welcome our nearly 20 new members. We also participated in a Native Seed Propagation Workshop where we learned seed starting techniques that break dormancy and successfully sow and germinate native seeds. GCY has worked with community groups and Town Parks & Recreation for approval to install a new native plant demonstration garden. The Club will replace non-native, invasive plants and lawn with native plant and shrubs. The garden will be completed in phases over the next several years and will feature signage that identifies plants and information links to the GCY website. This summer, GCY volunteers will prepare the garden for fall planting. The initial cost estimate is $10,000. GCY is seeking donations from local businesses and community members. Our Garden Therapy program has ‘blossomed.’ After a brief introduction to principles/practices of garden therapy in March, members have been working one-on-one with residents of Country House, an assisted living facility town. We have been giving programs since early spring and plan to continue through the end of the year. Residents have enjoyed planting herbs, tomatoes, annuals and some doing crafty projects with lavender. This summer we will tour Lasdon Park and Arboretum with Tolly Beck and enjoy additional garden tours in Yorktown in July and August.
